According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred while the market was bustling with activity, and everyone scrambled for safety.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with spokesman Henry Okoye announcing that two hoodlums were killed in the blast.

In a short statement on Tuesday night, Okoye said, “It was an IED that exploded,” adding “the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has deployed Anti-Bomb operatives to the scene.”
“Two persons who incidentally were the hoodlums were killed in the process of setting up an IED and in the process, it exploded.
“We have deployed operatives to the area. No cause for alarm. We ask all Imolites to report suspicious activities in their areas and be vigilant.”
