The UK is to stop generating electricity from fossil fuels.
The last coal-fired power plant in the town of Ratcliffe-on-Soar in England ceased operations on Monday, ending 142 years of reliance on the fossil fuel known for its heavy environmental impact.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to generations as a country,” said British Environment Secretary Michael Shanks.
The use of this fossil energy became widespread in England in the 18th century during the industrial revolution, notably with the invention of the steam engine which could only be powered by coal.
“This is a truly remarkable day because, after all, Britain built its entire strength on coal, that is, on the industrial revolution,” said Lord Deben, the longest-serving environment secretary.
