Washington, (EFE).- The United States announced on Wednesday that it has banned former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) and former Vice President Jorge Glas from entering the country , accusing them of being involved in corruption cases.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement that Correa and Glas “are not eligible for entry into the United States due to their involvement in significant corruption while in office.”
In the statement, Miller expressed U.S. support for all Ecuadorians who are “committed to increasing government transparency and holding corrupt public officials accountable.”
The former president, who remains very present in the political life of his country through social networks, is facing an eight-year prison sentence and disqualification for the ‘Bribes 2012-2016’ case.
Glas, who was one of the strongmen of Correa’s government, was arrested on April 5 during an assault by Ecuadorian security forces on the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he had requested asylum.
Glas was then subject to an arrest warrant and pretrial detention in connection with the reconstruction works following the strong earthquake in 2016, in which he is accused of alleged embezzlement (misappropriation of public funds), although both he and Correa claim to be victims of political persecution.
