Congressman Antonio ‘Toño’ Rivera Callejas stated that regardless of whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris win the next elections in the United States, the immigration policy towards the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala) will change “little or nothing”

According to Rivera in an interview with Proceso Digital, both parties, Republican and Democratic, maintain a similar position regarding migration, with minimal differences in their approach.

The international policy analyst also questioned the changes that have actually occurred for Honduras in the last US governments.

“We just saw the Trump administration and now the Biden administration, how have things changed for Honduras,” he said, referring to the continuity of migration containment policies.

Rivera noted that, although Republicans are associated with a more aggressive deportation policy, it was under Barack Obama’s administration that the largest number of returnees was recorded.

He also explained that if the Republicans were to take control, with figures such as Marco Rubio in key positions, pressure would intensify on Honduras to prevent it from becoming a “second Nicaragua, Venezuela or Cuba” in terms of the rule of law and democracy.
