What time will the seismic alert sound on September 19? This Thursday, Mexico City (CDMX) is preparing for the 2024 National Drill, a key activity to promote a culture of earthquake prevention.
The alarm will be activated at 11:00 sharp . For the first time, the seismic alert system will be transmitted directly to citizens’ cell phones, without the need for internet, according to authorities.
This drill will be historic, as residents of the capital and the surrounding area will receive the seismic alert on their cell phones via text message and sound.
In this first phase of the drill, only users of the cell phone companies Altán, Telcel, AT&T and Telefónica will receive the alert. This means that if your line belongs to a different company, you will not receive the seismic alert on your cell phone this Thursday.
In addition, the traditional system will continue to operate: the 13,989 loudspeaker poles in Mexico City will broadcast the alert as they have done on previous occasions. This signal will also be transmitted through authorized television and radio stations.
The drill will take place at 11:00 a.m. and the seismic alert will be broadcast in three states: Mexico City, Morelos and Puebla. In addition, the alert signal will reach nine key cities, including Colima, Manzanillo, Tecomán, Morelia, Toluca, Nezahualcóyotl, Oaxaca, Acapulco and Chilpancingo. This exercise seeks to prepare communities to respond efficiently to possible earthquakes.
The exercise on September 19 is based on a hypothesis of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake , with its epicenter in Acapulco, Guerrero, approximately 377 km from Mexico City.
The simulated earthquake is projected to be of great intensity, which will allow authorities and the population to test their response capabilities in the event of a possible disaster.
During the drill, two emergency response points will be set up, one in the Zócalo and another in the Torre Reforma, where personnel from various institutions such as the Navy, Defense, National Guard and Civil Protection will be coordinated to simulate an effective response.
This exercise will be led by the Head of Government, Martí Batres, and will be controlled from C-5, which will also manage the alerts sent to mobile devices.

The purpose of this drill is to strengthen the capacity to react to earthquakes and improve communication between citizens and authorities. The correct functioning of the Seismic Emergency Plan and the C-5 control system will also be verified.
