The engineer and politician suffered from terminal colon cancer and required five surgeries to relieve his pain, however, he developed an illness that led to his death today.
During his 79 years of life, Hernández had a long business career. After being invited to be part of a powerful construction company called ‘Hernández, Gómez y Serrano’, although with the departure of one of his partners and the death of another, the company ended up in his hands.
After achieving a good fortune, the engineer dedicated himself to politics and managed to become mayor of Bucaramanga and then was a candidate for the presidency, at which time his mother, Cecilia Suárez de Hernández, came to light.

Cecilia Suárez de Hernández accompanied her son in several interventions during his presidential campaign and although at that time he was seen as an ‘oak’ many have asked about his health after the news of the death of one of his descendants.

Cecilia Suárez was born in 1925, so she is currently 99 years old and was married to Luis Jesús Hernández Rojas, who was a tailor, while the former presidential candidate’s mother owned a tobacco factory.
Despite her age, Doña Cecilia looks in very good health and in the past she even told the reason why she sleeps with a gun near her side.
” Once a cow was stolen from the stable and I woke up. The cow was bellowing and so was the calf. I told my husband: ‘Luis, they stole the cow.’ And he told me: ‘I’m not stopping.’ So I stood up, took out my revolver, they were taking the cow up the hill and I shot it ,” she said at the time.
