The WHO has decided to partner with social media to disseminate evidence-based content and combat false information.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has agreed to collaborate for one year with the Chinese social network Tik Tok to make it easier for people to access reliable health information and combat hoaxes (false information) that spread on the Internet.

One in four adults actively seeks out informative content on different social platforms, including Tik Tok.

The UN health agency has therefore decided to partner with social media to disseminate evidence-based content, fight misinformation and promote “health literacy” and healthy behaviours.

“This collaboration could mark a turning point in how platforms can be more socially responsible,” said WHO chief scientist Jeremy Farrar.

In order to reach digital consumers of all ages, but particularly the youngest, WHO will focus its strategy on disseminating health information in short, easy-to-understand video formats.

Support is also planned for so-called “influencers” in creating content, through training that enables them to create positive dialogues about health.
