The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a dire warning about a threat that could reverse more than a century of medical progress: antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infections.

In an urgent appeal to world leaders meeting next week at the UN General Assembly in New York, WHO stressed the need for strong, coordinated action to tackle this worsening global crisis.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned at the agency’s weekly press conference that antimicrobial resistance, mainly caused by the misuse and overuse of medicines, could take us back to the pre-antibiotic era.

“Antimicrobial resistance threatens to undo a century of medical progress and make treatable infections a death sentence,” Tedros said.
