Following a shark attack that injured a young man on the beaches of Tela on Monday, a Honduran biologist used the TikTok platform to explain the possible reasons behind the presence of these predators on the coast , calling for calm and caution.

The expert, with the user danny_germer , explained that sharks have inhabited the oceans for approximately 450 million years and are the apex predators in the water.

According to the biologist, this behavior is natural and is related to certain climatic phenomena and sea conditions.

“When there are storms, river basins carry all kinds of sediment, dead animals, fish and garbage into the sea, which makes the water cloudy,” he explained in his video.

“Also keep in mind that there are hurricanes in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico right now , which is further muddying the water,” he added.

The biologist explained that these conditions, especially near river mouths and in dock areas, tend to attract large fish, which in turn attracts the attention of sharks.

” Sharks are not discriminating or discerning what they are going to eat. They are not dangerous, but we do need to be careful,” he said.

When to avoid going to the sea?

Among the recommendations offered by the specialist, he stressed the importance of avoiding the sea when it is rough, choppy or dirty. He also urged not to turn sharks into the “villains” of the story, recalling that these animals act out of curiosity and not malice.

“You have the reasoning to make better decisions so that we are all better off,” he concluded.

The attack in Tela has raised concerns among residents and tourists, but experts are calling for calm and following security recommendations to avoid future incidents.

The mayor’s office also recommended that people avoid going into the sea, especially at the mouths of rivers and lagoons where the water is cloudy, until weather conditions improve.
