A report called ” Honduran Educational Context, of the department of Choluteca and its municipalities 2023 ” prepared by the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University ( UPNFM ) revealed the devaluation of education in the department, which leads to the desire of students to emigrate.

Twenty percent of parents under 30 years of age believe that studying at university does not guarantee a better future. In addition, 40% of them believe that in Honduras it is not worth studying or being a good student, revealing that this segment of the population undervalues the importance of education.

In addition, it details that this generational range that covers 30 years of age is distanced from those who are older than 30 years, and consider that education is important. However, they highlight economic problems, and even food security problems in order to complete their studies.

So much so that 28% of the parents surveyed are of the opinion that it does not matter what they learn as long as they end up with a degree.

The same UPNFM report focuses on two aspects: first, the food security problems affecting the department, and second, the lack of financial resources to complete their studies.

In terms of food security, the students surveyed were asked if they have gone without eating due to a lack of food at home . 15% answered yes , while another 12% said they have gone a day without eating due to a lack of food.

The study revealed that the members of the family who make sacrifices by not eating at more than one meal so that the students can eat are parents and grandparents.

Regarding the economic situation that affects them in completing their studies, 50.2% said that this was the main problem in completing their studies. On the other hand, 26.3% said that they do not continue studying because what they learn is not useful.
