What happened? Fujiyama faces danger in Chiapas as he continues his journey for education in Honduras.
Japanese-Honduran philanthropist Shin Fujiyama experienced a tense moment during his 3,000-kilometer journey from Mexico to Honduras , a challenge he is undertaking for the education of children in the country.
Fujiyama , who was in the Arriaga area, Chiapas, shared through his social networks the incident he experienced a few moments ago.
According to his statements, he was intercepted by a suspicious vehicle with no identification, which caused great concern to the activist and his team.
“My people, I’m a little worried. A car just intercepted us here in Arriaga, a white Frontier car stopped us in the middle of the road, asking us where we were going, why, what route. We don’t know who they were, they had a radio, they had no identification, neither they nor the vehicle. We know that we are in Chiapas, the most conflict-ridden state in the entire country,” said Fujiyama, visibly affected.
Although they initially thought they were authorities, the Mexican Police later confirmed that the people who intercepted them did not belong to any official corporation, increasing the activist’s concern.
“The Mexican police have just confirmed to me that the car that was chasing us and the boys who said they were from the police are not from the police. It was a lie. We don’t know why they would say something like that, I’m a little more worried now,” he said.
The activist also highlighted the tense situation in the region, mentioning the presence of several trucks full of soldiers, something he described as “normal in Chiapas due to the conflicts that the people are experiencing.”
However, he said he would make decisions about his challenge in the coming hours.
“We don’t know why they are going to say something. I am a little more worried now and worse, we are in the area where suddenly three trucks came, full of soldiers, and it is something normal here in Chiapas because of the conflicts that the people are experiencing here. We have to make some decisions for this challenge, we will be informing you right now,” he said.
The police arrived
Shin reported that after his video went viral, the Mexican police arrived to help him.
“Thanks to all of you sharing the previous videos, the word got so loud that it reached the Mexican police and now they will accompany us to Tapachula ,” he said in a video where he can be seen continuing on his way.
Shin Fujiyama’s challenge
Shin Fujiyama started this challenge in June 2023, with the goal of traveling 3,000 kilometers from Mexico to Honduras in support of the education of Honduran children, seeking to inspire more people to collaborate with his cause and increase access to quality education in vulnerable communities.
The renowned founder of the Students Helping Honduras organization is covering this distance on foot and by bicycle as part of a challenge to raise funds and awareness about the importance of education in his country.
The journey has been full of challenges, not only physical but also security-related, as evidenced by the recent incident in Chiapas . Despite the adversities, the activist remains committed to his mission of transforming education in Honduras.
Fujiyama is expected to provide more information about the decisions he will make to ensure his safety in the coming days as he continues his inspiring journey to Honduras .
