WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international playmaker cut a frustrated figure after being replaced just past the hour mark in a meeting with the Gunners. United were trailing 1-0 when the decision was made to take Toone off, with Melvine Malard sent on in her place.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lionesses star Toone was unable to deliver her usual brand of creativity for United as they toiled on home soil, leading to her number being held up. Disappointment was etched all over the 25-year-old’s face as she took up a seat on the bench.

    • WHAT COMMENTATOR SAID

After being caught on camera looking a little grumpy, one of the commentators covering the game said that Toone “had a face like a smacked bum”. According to the Daily Mail, bosses at the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) are now looking into that quip – which has gone viral.

      WHAT NEXT?

The comment in question was made on an alternative feed to the one covering the game for the BBC, but has still been picked up by fans around the world – and WSL chiefs are taking a dim view. Toone and United will be back in action on Sunday when playing host to Aston Villa.
