She was born on October 20, 1964 ( age 59 ), in California, United States. Her Indian mother and Jamaican father divorced when she was 5, at which time her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris , a cancer researcher and civil rights activist, took over raising her daughters.
He attended Howard University, one of the most renowned historically African-American universities in the United States, where he became involved in political issues such as apartheid in South Africa and race relations in the United States.
She has had a distinguished political career, characterized by her focus on justice and equity. She began as a district attorney in San Francisco and was later elected Attorney General of California.
In 2017, she became a senator, standing out for her tough questioning in Senate hearings. Her career led her to become the first woman and person of African descent and Asian origin to hold the vice presidency of the country.
Growing up in Oakland, Harris’ mother kept her in touch with her Indian and African-American roots when she saw her father on weekends. During the summers of her childhood, she would travel to India to spend time with her grandparents.
As a child, she also demonstrated for civil rights alongside her Jamaican father, an economics professor, and her Indian mother, a breast cancer researcher.
“In college, I worked at McDonald’s to earn pocket money. Some of the people I worked with were raising their families on that paycheck. They were working second or even third jobs to pay rent and buy food ,” she wrote in a post on her X account.

She is married to Doug Emhoff, an entertainment attorney , whom she met through a mutual friend. After a year of dating, Emhoff proposed in March 2014 and the couple married in an intimate ceremony at a Santa Barbara courthouse on August 22 of that year. Harris and Emhoff wrote their own vows for the ceremony.
Although Harris has no biological children , she became a stepmother to Emhoff’s two children, Cole (30) and Ella (25) , from his previous marriage. Kamala has always spoken fondly of her stepchildren, describing them as “bright, talented, funny kids who have grown into extraordinary adults . “
