“I tried to dress and groom myself as best as possible so that at least my body looks decent,” reads the farewell message.
A young student in the Foreign Languages program at the Universidad del Atlántico in Colombia decided to end his life on August 22.
This is Julián David Cantillo Pineda, who jumped from the sixth floor of one of the buildings on the university campus, all in front of his classmates.
They even gave him first aid and rushed him to the Portoazul Auna clinic, where he died minutes later due to his injuries.
Hours before his death, Julián left a heartbreaking message in a WhatsApp group of his colleagues, where he apologized and provided details on how to proceed following his death.
” Hi, I don’t think many people here know me. I apologize if what I’m about to do cancels any of your classes (I hope not, my stupid life shouldn’t be that important). My dad’s number is ***, his name is Julio Cantillo. I’d appreciate it if you could get in touch with him, I don’t want my mom to find out first ,” the text read.
He also left instructions on where to find a note addressed to his family.
Additionally, on his WhatsApp status, the young man posted a photograph of himself with a caption that reflected his deep sadness and lack of self-esteem: ” I never had the confidence to upload a picture of myself. In fact I never had the confidence to even take a picture of myself. Today I tried to dress and groom myself as best as possible so that at least my body looks decent when they come to pick it up, and I still look disgusting .”
The impact of this tragic event has led the university to strengthen psychological support services for students and promote mental health awareness campaigns.
