Last weekend, Ukrainian authorities searched restaurants, cafes and concert halls in kyiv for men who had not registered with the military, AP news agency reports.
Checks were also carried out in a shopping centre. The men were asked to show identification and were registered in the database.
Ukraine is doing so as part of a mobilization campaign that has become stricter this year. Indeed, a new law came into force this spring requiring Ukrainian citizens eligible for military service to leave their data in an online system.
Ukrainian men aged 25 to 60 are eligible for military service. Men aged 18 to 60 are not allowed to leave the territory of Ukraine.
