Multiple football clubs including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have been posting a ‘Click Here’ on X but what is the reason behind it?
In the meme, the accounts share an image on X [formerly Twitter] with an arrow pointing to the bottom left of the image with the ‘Click Here’ prompting the user to click on the ‘ALT Text’ button.
The Alt Text button is an accessibility feature on X, that allows the poster to use words to describe what their image is about for the visually impaired users to understand the context of the post. However, football clubs have been using the feature to leave small messages for their fans.
For example, Barcelona used their alt text to say ‘If you read this you are a culer’. While PSG Feminine used their text to say ‘We are in the semis!’
As per the BBC, there has been some uproar from the visually impaired about the use of the meme using the ALT Text feature. The uproar has been due to the meme being ‘disrespectful’ and leaving the visually impaired feeling like outsiders based on the joke.
As social media trends generally do, the ‘Click Here’ trend will also likely die down quickly enough. However, this trend definitely ruffled more feathers than most others and the trend dying down will help understand the uses of the accessibility settings.
