Sporting CP star ‘hoping’ for Man City transfer as he opens up on Pep Guardiola chat after statement Champions League victory

Sporting CP's Maximiliano Araujo has admitted he's 'hoping' to join Manchester City after a post-Champions League match chat with Pep Guardiola.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The 24-year-old Uruguayan wing-back, who moved to Europe for the first time in his career this summer, scored a goal in Sporting CP’s glorious 4-1 win over reigning English champions Manchester City in the Champions League last week. Araujo has revealed that he also approached City boss Guardiola for a photograph, after which they shared a brief conversation.

    Upon reaching his homeland for Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifying games, Araujo told reporters when asked about a potential move to Man City: “I hope so, I hope so… I asked him [Guardiola] for a photo, we talked for a few minutes and he congratulated me. I’m very happy about that. We talked about the game, nothing more.”

    The former Montevideo Wanderers youth player wants to follow Ruben Amorim to the Premier League. The 39-year-old manager led Sporting CP to a 4-2 win over Braga in his final game at the club. Amorim has already reached Manchester United and has formally taken charge of the team.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAXI ARAUJO?

    For now, Araujo will stay in Lisbon and will be next seen in action for his club on November 22 as they take on Amarante FC in a Taca de Portugal fourth-round clash.
