The Honduran government has decided to extend the state of emergency, which has been in effect since December 2022, for an additional 45 days, according to National Police spokesman Edgardo Barahona.
In this sense, this measure will be applied until November 16, 2024 in 226 of the 298 municipalities in the country.
The state of emergency was implemented in response to increasing violence and crime, particularly in response to problems such as extortion, contract killings and kidnapping.
However, the policy has faced severe criticism for its negative impact on human rights and its effectiveness in reducing crime, analysts say.
International bodies, including the U.S. State Department and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, say abuses have been reported while the measure was in place.
Local experts and activists also warn that the continuation of these policies, without a comprehensive and preventive approach, could perpetuate the security problems they seek to eradicate.
It is also detailed that 39.9% of these occur between Saturday and Sunday, and the departments of Cortés, Francisco Morazán, Olancho, Colón, Yoro and Comayagua accumulated 63.9% of the total homicides recorded in the national territory.
