In recent days, searches related to the viral photo of Tino Asprilla have intensified, where the former Colombia player shows his masculinity during a match between Colombia and Chile in 1993 , years after the event the image continues to gain popularity on social networks.
The emblematic case dates back to 1993, when a renowned journalist captured one of the most iconic moments of the former footballer’s career, who would later become a sex symbol.
What is the story behind Tino Asprilla’s photo?
The photo was captured by photojournalist Liliana Toro Adelsohn, during a match between the Colombian and Chilean national teams at the El Campín stadium, when Faustino Asprilla scored a great goal, showing much of his masculinity.
The journalist’s mission was to get the cover of the magazine Deporte Grafico and for that she considered Tino the Colombian star of the moment. “I arrived at the stadium, I stood in the north goal and I dedicated myself to Asprilla,” said the photographer.
A day later the photograph became a complete uproar and there were doubts about the final destination of the photograph, which showed the most intimate ‘detail’ of the striker of the moment in Colombia and of the man who was already doing mischief with his talent in Italy.
“It was a very curious image. In the end, he decided not to put it on the cover, but to put it inside on a full page,” said the reporter, who received only $40,000 for a photo that at the time was worth its weight in gold.
Faustino Asprilla’s version
In August 2024, during a breakfast for chapter 86 of Desafío XX, he shared with the semi-finalists Alejo, Darlyn, Francisco and Natalia, but also with two of the former participants such as Luisa and Be. about the image that went around the world more than 30 years ago.
Be, in a moment of emotion, decided to question Tino about the photo; “Tino, one question. Why did you lose your temper in that game because you weren’t wearing lycra? What happened there?” Be asked while some looked at him in surprise, as the footballer asked him to put them in context, so Be was much more direct.
The former footballer explained that there was a moment when he had to think about his shorts or lycra, since he had sent his suitcases to the airport, so he decided to play without shorts.
“A magazine published a huge photo of the kind you could peel off and stick on the wall. It went around the world because at that time I was among the five best players in the world. Today you can see a photo of Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, what little things ,” Tino Asprilla added ironically.
