The man said that when he realized the dog was missing, he felt like he had lost a son.
An American man was deceived for five years into believing that his dog, Buck, was dead, because that’s what his girlfriend at the time had told him.
However, the truth was different, and their touching story of reunion went viral after discovering that Buck was alive.
Derrick Hancock adopted Buck in 2018, and the dog became his closest companion. “He was my one and only best friend,” Hancock said in an interview with ABC’s KVUE.
A year after adopting the dog, Hancock was sent to Iraq for work, so he decided to leave his dog in the care of his girlfriend. A month later, he received a devastating call: “Buck is gone,” his partner informed him.
According to the woman, the dog escaped and, after attacking a cat, was captured by animal control. She assured her that it had been euthanized. “It was like losing a child,” said Hancock, devastated by the news.
Fate, however, had other plans. Five years later, the Lost & Found Pets – Taylor, Tx found a dog they named Sebastian. They posted photos in hopes that someone would recognize him.
“Oh my God, I thought he was dead,” was Hancock’s first reaction when she learned her dog was still alive. Rescuers say it’s possible Hancock’s ex-girlfriend wasn’t lying, but that someone in the neighborhood may have saved Buck before he was euthanized.
Now, Hancock is waiting to be reunited with his faithful friend.
“I can’t get excited until I have him in my arms. That’s where I know he’s really home, safe and sound. We’re together again, and we can finally be a family,” he concluded excitedly.
